BTW I am not convinced that neglect (a term of art anyway) could not cause a lot (bit not all) of this....care home residents are essentially on a low-tech life-support system and disrupting that could cause many of them to die pretty rapidly.

Agreed. I'm thinking more about dehydration, malnutrition and loneliness but pulling the plug on critical care/meds would certainly produce a spike.
